Abstract

The appearance of the first signs of landscape sensitivity in Toscana was the result of a very long process which can be noticed in Fourteenth and Fifteenth-century literature, painting and architecture. It is evident from the transformation of rocche into villas as those of the Medici’s conveniently proved, but, above, from all those works undertaken by Michelozzo di Bartolomeo for Cosimo de Medici in order to turn some farms and rural castles into recreation villas for pleasure. Giusto Utens’ paintings in the villa of Artimino are great examples of this architectonic pattern. The process began with the complexes of Trebbio, Cafaggiolo and Careggi, and ended with the villa of Fiesole, the loggia of which had only one meaning: the disinterested contemplation of the valley.
