Abstract

Despite being well-known for his work as the master builder of the cathedral in Lleida during the last quarter of the 14th century, the architect and sculptor Guillem Solivella has no well-defined artistic image. Adding old formal observations to recent documentary contributions, this article presents and defends the thesis that the style of the sculptor Solivella can be found in the altarpiece of Gerb and in other plastically-related works from Lleida. This hypothesis specifically takes into account the art of Jaume Cascalls, Solivella’s father-in law, and his predecessor at the post in Lleida, who was probably also his teacher and mentor.
