Abstract

The oeuvre of the French artist Maurice Denis was partially interpreted in different ways throughout the twentieth century. From the seventies on, some interpreters voiced the need to understand his production globally, and to consider its diverse facets as components of a heterogeneous whole. This article aims to re-examine Maurice Denis’s critical fortune, focusing on opinions put forward during the last century, which emphasized only certain aspects of his oeuvre: the leader of Nabi modernity, a theorist of new classicism, a religious painter … until integral reception was promoted on the occasion of the hundredth anniversary of the artist’s birth.
