According to the strong gender gap in metal music, the aim of this article is to show the results of a collective analysis, conducted during the pandemic, that identifies concrete barriers and limitations to participation in metal communities in both the Global North and South. This analysis has been developed online by a think tank/deliberation group from a participatory action research (PAR) project of 36 feminist researchers, artists and activists from the metal music scenes in their respective countries. For the study we have developed an online methodology based on: 1) a panoramic and hermeneutic transdisciplinary research of gender barriers in the labour and artistic spheres based on the available literature and, 2) a sharing in the reflection group with the aim of summarising those that could be applied to the metal music scenes. In this way, we aim to gain a better understanding of the gendered structures, mechanisms and constraints contained within metal communities in different contexts, thereby contributing to a broader goal for gender justice.
