Abstract

The present article compares two novels that were published at a similar time, José María Arguedas’ Los ríos profundos and José Revueltas’ El luto humano. The nonconformist nature of these books and that they are both based around a key continuity makes them appear as similar works, be it historically or in relation to the national or continental literary canons that they are apparently part of. However, if one reflects upon subjectivity complexes and the boundaries of representation, it becomes apparent that these works are disparate in their dealings with indigenous subjects (both popular and marginal ones); it also becomes apparent that each work promotes specific kinds of dialectic, ideology and conscience.
