Discourse on Essays in Argentinian Culture since the mid-1980s

Discourse on essays, Academic culture, Research and writing, Argentina, 1984-2003Abstract
The so called “discurso sobre el ensayo” (“discourse on essays”) is a critical event which, since the mid-eighties, interrogates and unsettles the morality of pragmatism and the verifiable efficiency that sustain dominant forms of academic research in the humanities and social sciences in Argentinian universities. The ethos of the “discourse on essays” would correspond to a non-conformist and dissident academic life style that expresses the necessity of exceeding disciplinarian limits and interdisciplinary multiplication to restore the link between writing and research with the heuristic power that weakens or inhibits methodological imperatives. This paper registers, comments and evaluates the main institutional effects of this critical discourse between 1984 and 2003 through the edition of dossiers in cultural magazines, the establishment of journals devoted to essays, the publication of monographs, and the organization of colloquia and international symposia on the politics and rhetoric of critical essays.Downloads
