Abstract

The 2008 crisis is a favourite subject of social films. They are called realist because of their interest in the present. However, the latest Spanish social cinema stands out for its use of symbols with which it aspires to represent a deeper reality than that which emanates from the contents of current affairs. We propose a more complete understanding of this symbolic social cinema by analysing some of its films and using three tools: a theory of modern symbolism that goes beyond the realism-symbolism opposition, a catalogue of symbols, and a theory of genres based on the form of symbolic contents.
