The fight against the demolition of the building at Ofelia Nieto 29 has been one of the most relevant events in the community movement in Madrid in the last years. For over two years, the concerned family and movement activists were in open conflict with the Madrid City Council in order to prevent the demolition of a house affected by the revision of the Urban Plan for the districts of Tetuán and Moncloa-Aravaca. In the present article, we analyse the main contributions of this case to the struggle of the community movement: how the fight at Ofelia Nieto created a counter-narrative regarding the city model, one opposed to the official narrative developed by the city’s authorities. The article is divided in two sections: the first one is about the context, and there we provide a detailed description of the fight and its different stages; the second section focuses on the analysis, and we analyse the different dimensions in the construction of the (counter) narrative regarding the city model. We conclude by pointing out that one of the main contributions of the Ofelia Nieto 29 struggle has been the creation of a counter-hegemonic imagery aimed at counteracting the effects of the dominant imagery built by the City Council and the large real estate firms.Downloads
