11. Parasols or umbrellas. The Hong Kong protests in perspective
Keywords:
Hong Kong, social conflict, social protest, democratizationAbstract
The present article deals with a series of issues hovering over the focus of the recent Hong Kong protests. To begin with, it offers an explanation of why such protests have come to be known as the “umbrella protests”. It also reviews the dynamics of previous protests and explores who the demonstrators are and what their claims are. In this context, it helps us discern whether the protests have wide popular support or they are just being staged by interest groups. Finally, it deals with a different set of issues such as who governs Hong Kong, what China’s position is in the face of it and what the position of the international community is.
