Abstract

Starting at the end of 2013, Ukraine is going through a severe crisis. The timid and alleged pretensions of the country’s government to move closer to the EU triggered an outburst of protest which ended up leading to civil war. The government’s decision not to sign the Association Agreement with the EU and, later on, its announcement of a commercial agreement with Russia both reveal the entry of a new actor in the conflict: Russia.

This current state of tension, protest radicalization and political instability has favoured the celebration of a referendum for independence in Crimea, a region with a pro-Russian majority, and the signing of an accession agreement with Russia, a country which is trying to restore its old sway over the region.
