Abstract

The Catalan independence movement has experienced an unprecedented expansion in the last years. In the literature on nationalism and secessionism, national identity and economic calculations are usually considered to be the main factors for supporting independence. Nevertheless, this paper tries to provide new explanations setting the movement in the context of the protest cycle triggered by the crisis, which has involved the emergence and revitalization of networks and discourses characterized by a will of rupture with the status quo. It is considered that this has become a political opportunity for the expansion of the independence movement beyond the traditional nationalist circles, since the new rupturist frames that have spread among the population connect with the political orientation and frames of the movement, that in turn have become broader and more inclusive.
