21. Conversations with the United Self-Defence Forces of Colombia (AUC): The common criminal’s road to becoming political criminal
Keywords:
Colombia, armed action, political criminal, drug dealer, social conflictAbstract
The group of drug dealers gathered in the United Self-Defence of Colombia (Autodefensas Unidas de Colombia) were about to be acknowledged as political criminals by the Colombian government, thanks to their solid and coherent political discourse, their close links to the Colombian elites (all local, regional and national) and their resounding armed actions. However, for several reasons ranging from the Colombian laws and Constitution upheld by the Parliament, to the denunciations by certain journalists, opposition parties and social movements, their goal was not fulfilled.
