Abstract

This paper aims at exploring the fear of crime experienced by the Spanish population, as both a personal and a social problem. It does so by using data from the barometers by the Centro de Investigaciones Sociológicas (CIS). The interest that the concept of fear of crime has when discussing a myriad of social conflicts is first discussed. Empirical evidence about the most important criminal concerns the Spanish interviewees show when referring to their most pressing personal and social problems is also presented. Finally, the paper explores the locus of projection, a concept that refers to whether people are concerned about crime for themselves, for others, or both, and which has many socio-criminological implications.
