Abstract

The recent period of social and political effervescence in Catalonia has brought about the emergence or consolidation of certain social actors that have altered the traditional configuration of the country’s political arena. One of such actors, the Candidacies of Popular Unity (or CUP), has generated a model of mobilization that blurs the barriers between institutional politics and social mobilization thanks to its structure of political socialization itself.

This article uses a hermeneutical and ethnographic approach to carry out an empirical study which includes a focus group interview and 18 in-depth interviews with members and supporters of the organization, held at different locations between July 2013 and September 2014. It also used ethnographic notes generated by participant observation in various acts of the organization.

Its main methodological tool has been the sociological analysis of the discourse system, applied to three main analytical dimensions: collective identity, assemblies and structures of mobilization.

The work done shows a hybrid model of movement-party generated by an interactional structure with specific patterns of sociality, and a collective identity that reformulates the classical notion of militant identity.
