THE CONSTRUCTION OF HEGEMONY: THE CURRENT LINKS BETWEEN THE ECONOMIC ELITE AND THE PRESS IN CHILE
Keywords:
elites, media, Post−transitional society, Power resources, public opinionAbstract
This Research aims to identify possible patterns and mechanisms that are influenced by the Chilean elite in relation to the processes of news production. This analysis shows the contextualizing aspects in this case and also the importance of the press as a resource of power for an oligarchic class. Furthermore, it seeks to study how print media worked and acted during the years 2014 and 2015, a post−transitional context in which Government attempt to implement the most profound socio−economic reforms since the return to democracy in the country. The methodology proposes two dimensions of analysis: (1) the observation of publications that main Chilean political−economic and national newspapers made about these reforms; And (2) the realization of 10 semi−structured qualitative interviews with journalists and editors of the analyzed media spectrum that were protagonists with the information coverage process of the reforms, in order to deepen and understand the structure and organization of the written media in the context of conflict that addresses this work.
