This article explores the factors that enabled the holding of the Catalan referendum on self-determination on 1 October (1-O), 2017. Based on «participant observation» and secondary sources from newspapers, it is argued that a peculiar combination of three elements—mobilization, repression and ballot—helps to explain why the 1-O referendum could eventually be held, despite all court actions and despite the fact that the Spanish Security Forces tried to hold it back. The article underlines the theoretical and practical implications of this historical event departing from the consensual mechanisms which characterize our contemporary post-politics.
