The alternativa – the alternate election of creole and peninsular friars – is usually presented as the most evident manifestation of Madrid’s will to control Hispanic Americans. So it was, and the New Granada Augustinian friars are an eloquent example of peninsular obstinacy, even though the system could not properly function due to the shortage of Augustinians from the Iberian Peninsula qualified to fill the position in that region. Nevertheless, the alternativa was imposed in various surprising circumstances, because it was nothing more than a form of control of conventual power. In Bogotá this led to paradoxical and some times even seemingly contradictory situations.
