Firstly, this article presents two new series of both power capacity and production for the Spanish electrical industry before the Spanish Civil War: Both hydro and thermal as primary resources of energy are distinguished. These new data have been mostly constructed thanks to printed material, though not available till now. Secondly, this article is partially devoted to explain how the series have been constructed: a comprehensive critica1 survey of primary sources is offered and the methods of estimating the gaps are specified. The new data confirm the hydro dependence of the Spanish sector in the eve of the Civil War; and they reveal that the previous official data had been underestimated. Nevertheless, this new series shows that the most intensive periods of increase of both capacity and production did not take place during the 1920s and 1930s, but during the earlier decades.
