Abstract

This research explores the commercial and industrial development in the 19th century in an essentially grarian economy, as well as their interactions. The case study under analysis is Trenor y Cía. (1838-1926) company, we look at its evolution and the relevance of their business segments in order to highlight the presence of a Valencian modern industry in that period. The activities that generated to main profits include the sale of sacks, dried grapes and especially fertilizers. This
family business contributed to the progress of the Valencian agriculture, as well as to the development of an associated industry, that was derived from the agricultural sector. We also emphasize another feature of the Trenor family, as banquing traders, who provide financing to other retailers.
