Abstract

The voluntary residential segregation in the Metropolitan Region of Barcelona is very high. The index of segregation and the multivariate analysis (factorial and cluster) of data from the census 2001 shows strong segregation of the upper classes. This residential separation keeps the traditional pattern of congregation in the urban centers, especially in dense cities. The other major pattern is the residential concentration of the high class in some municipalities of metropolitan area. Thus, this pattern of segregation on a metropolitan scale is evident in upper-class municipalities: the axis from Barcelona to Sant Cugat, from Barcelona to the Baix Maresme and the upper-middle class axis to Sitges. Two others high class concentrations are the cities of Matadepera (associated with Terrassa) and Ametlla del Valles (Granollers-associated).
