Abstract

The economic crisis that began in 2008 and its political management have been the causes of the increase of inequalities in the city of Barcelona and its metropolitan area. In this territory, it is possible to find some locations, called in this article “red zones”, which are more affected by these inequalities, not only due to its intensity but also because they remain along the time. This article considers the situation of social inequality in these territories, reflects on the causes and consequences of these inequalities, the actions taken to bring its living conditions closer to those of the rest of the city and examines the role that the new metropolitan planning has to have in reducing those inequalities.
