Abstract

This article analyses the most relevant similarities and differences in the processes of labour insertion of natives and immigrants in Madrid between 1880 and 1930. Variables such as the skills required in the exercise of an occupation, their hierarchical position within a professional scale, the age of the individual or its geographical origin were decisive in the economic and social assimilation of both groups. The current work aims to determine the selective behaviour of Madrid’s labour market using two classifying tools of professions (HISCO and HISCLASS) adapted the Municipal Register of Inhabitants of Madrid. This has led to establish clear distinctions of social rank among the components of the urban labour market in terms of the origins they presented in 1880, 1905 and 1930.
