Abstract

The Area of Urban Ecology at University of General Sarmiento (Argentina) has been recently started a line of research focused on transition rural-urban zones of Buenos Aires. At the beginning of the article, theoretical preoccupation in defining rural-urban systems will be presented. There is an interest to discuss why this kind of studies are related to urban ecology as a discipline. Later, some international discussion about today´s perspectives of agriculture in rural-urban fringe will be introduced. Finally, the work presents certain references about the geographical make up of the green belt in the Buenos Aires Metropolitan Region. Studying spatial, environmental and social changes occurred in the producing rural-urban fringe during the last three decades will be the main objective of coming papers.
