Geography of virtual worlds: the case of Active Worlds.
Abstract
Virtual worlds have their own virtual geography —both physical and human—. Active Worlds is a good example of this. It is a 3D platform that contains the virtual world of Alpha World and its virtual underworlds. This virtual world allows the avatar - the digital projection of a person- to interact, to colonize, to design and to construct its own surroundings. The present article emerges from research based on the virtual world of Alpha World, and primarily the underworld of Sw City. First, a description of the avatars’ behaviour and dynamic is presented, followed by a detailed account of the digital morphology of Sw City. Virtual territory is approached from a multi-scale perspective – both macro and micro-: the first one associated with the global territory of Alpha World, and the second one from the virtual scope of Sw City.Downloads
