Abstract

This research will make a succinct review of the historiographical legacy of geography on the development of tram transport services from 1859 to the current period. The main objective is to reveal the spatial impact of the network of electric trams in Rio de Janeiro. Our database is based on web-sites of collectors and researchers and the use of photographic collections available on the Internet as a source of geographical studies. The history of establishment of the trams systems in Brazil will be complete in 2012, almost 153 years. Until the 1960's, Brazil has the largest transportation network of trams and complex in the world. The introduction of public transport system based on electric trams occurred in 1892, in a fact has transformed and modernized the characteristics of Brazilian cities. The growth of the lines and the emergence of integrated electrical networks of public transport had unprecedented spatial impacts that affected the morphology and development of the urban housing market in Brazilian cities.
