Abstract

Since its creation in the mid-1960s, the Geography Department of the University of Barcelona has held a Historical Archive of slides that for years constituted a key teaching tool. The Archive became obsolete with time and, for that reason, we have decided to upgrade and convert it to digital format, to facilitate and broaden its use. With this endeavor we are recovering slides that were pioneer in the emergence of the current visual sector. The main promoter of the slides Historical Archive was Prof. Salvador Llobet and it is in his honor that we have initiated the recovery task. The initial section of this paper outlines the objectives of the editors, and the methodology used to restore the original slides. It also describes the content of the Historical Archive, which has been structured in six different collections. These collections will be published in stages in the Digital Archive of the University of Barcelona, as well as in our own website (http://www.ub.edu/geoimatge/). The second part of the paper describes in detail the Salvador Llobet Collection. The Lantern Slides Collection has an historical value and is commented in the other article. Both of them are of exceptional value, and constitute a precious heritage of Geography teaching in the University of Barcelona. The paper also presents the other three collections that have been edited to date: the Roser Majoral, Lluís Casassas and Horacio Capel Collections.
