Intercultural mediation in health care: Contributions to health care.

Health systems are challenged to adequately address the needs of culturally heterogeneous populations (Mendonza et al., 2019). The pandemic has highlighted the need to guarantee access to health care and to promote quality service for all people without exception (Perna y Moreno, 2021). In this scenario, intercultural health mediation establishes an environment of mutual respect and works by alleviating the various barriers and negative factors that determine the health of the most vulnerable populations, such as migrant populations (Verrept, 2019). It also plays an essential role in preventing and promoting comprehensive care for the different social needs of the most vulnerable groups (Silva, 2020), guaranteeing the accessibility and equity of the health system (Rubio y Rubio, 2020). The objectives of this work are to identify the value that intercultural mediation brings to health care and to know what are the functions and experiences carried out in this field. In order to find out, a narrative review has been elaborated, emphasizing the literature of the last eight years. The results show the need to define the professional figure of the intercultural health mediator given the benefits he or she brings to improving the quality of health care and promoting a more accessible and equitable health system. Even more so in situations of health crisis, where the vulnerabilities of migrant populations have been accentuated. It reflects a long journey to achieve it full of challenges and new challenges given the changing nature of our society.
