The aim of this article is to investigate the impact of the stigma associated with families of individuals with Severe Mental Disorders. A descriptive exploratory qualitative study was conducted to delve into the opinions, thoughts, and experiences of these families. A total of eight family members participated through interview and focus group techniques. The results show the existence of a stigma still prevalent in today’s society, which significantly affects families who live or have lived with mental illness within their households. Psychosocial consequences such as fear, overprotection, and guilt were identified, particularly among women. The lack of widespread knowledge, the deficiency in professional training, and the difficulties in accessing the mental health system also perpetuate existing stereotypes. The findings suggest the need to implement strategies to reduce stigma, improve access to mental health care, and provide greater family support to create a more understanding and empathetic environment for users and their families. Promoting equality in the care and support of individuals with Severe Mental Disorders is essential, addressing gender differences in the perception of stigma. In this regard, Social Work plays an essential role in advocating for social justice, promoting research, education, and awareness about mental health, with the aim of reducing stigma and enhancing support to families.
