The symbolic religious field in the current Mexican cinema
Keywords:
Catholic religion, Mexican cinema, SymbolismAbstract
The article discusses some trends in the representation of social attitudes towards the Catholic religion and the institution that represents, in Mexican cinema in the period of the last 25 years. This period has unique characteristics in Mexico marked, first, by the rapprochement between the national government and the Vatican and on the other by a series of corruption scandals that engulfed the institution itself. From a social perspective, in Mexico has been observed a growing secularization of society and the development of particular forms of religiosity, increasingly out of religious orthodoxy. The films analyzed were produced between 1998 and 2012 to show some contrasting trends: allegations of corruption against the ecclesiastical hierarchy, versus the presence of the priests associated with liberation theology and defense of human rights. The presence of religious fanaticism, leads to moral, spiritual and even physical destruction, versus different forms of appropriation, of religiosity, allowing a spiritual liberation of subjectsReferences
