Resum

The main objective of this article is to provide a robust analysis, in conceptual, historical and chronological terms, of the modern food distribution systems in Spain, a relatively recent area of research. To this end, different previously unused business sources are used, including professional reviews and journals, material which has been largely neglected. These sources shed light on the history food distribution in Spain. Special emphasis is placed upon the initial phase of the modern era of distribution and the role of some of the pioneers in the fi eld. The revolution in retailing, which began in the 1970’s, is also placed under the spotlight, illuminating the structural changes that have
lead to an intense process of concentration in the sector.
