Resumen

The progressive increase in the consumption of cotton clothes, printed or not, during the XVII century in Catalonia, supported the rise of the Catalonia calico printing sector in the first third of the XVIII century. At first, the importation of the cotton clothes from the Ottoman Levant, a great part of them capable of being printed, was determinant in this process. Afterwards, the recourse to Maltese spun cotton was imposed. Lastly, the consolidation of the Catalonian calico printing sector cannot be explained without the hidden protectionism that involved Bourbons' sanitary legislation..
