Author Guidelines

Presentation guidelines

Authors should observe the journal's in-house style in the following areas.

1 Format

Manuscripts should be submitted electronically, preferably in RTF or Word.

In addition, research personnel must follow the UB Criteria https://www.ub.edu/llibre-estil/criteris.php

2 Figures

Manuscripts may include tables (with text and/or numbers) and figures (images, graphics, screen captures, etc., using the JPEG standard with a maximum dimension of 600 pixels). Number this material (Figure 1, Table 1, etc.) and submit it in an Excel file, each figure in its own spreadsheet. Indicate the place in the text where the figures are to appear by a short descriptive text, which will be published beneath the figure.

Centre the captions for tables, figures, photographs and other such material in font size 10, with no final full stop. References to table, figure, graphic, photograph or image numbers should provide complete information.

Table 1. Comparison of data submitted and answers received

3 Length

Submissions to the section Research papers and review articles should not exceed 6,000 words. Submissions to the sections Case studies and analyses and Resources should not exceed 3,000 words.

4 Page format and font

All texts should be left-justified in Times New Roman font size 12.

5 Paragraphs

Paragraphs should not be indented and should be separated by a blank line. Before the title of a new section there should be two blank lines.

6 Title page, information on the author and section titles within the paper

To ensure blind review, the first page of the manuscript should include only the title, which should be in font size 16, in bold, using sentence-case capitalization (i.e., capitalizing the first word and all subsequent proper nouns). Do not punctuate the title with a final full stop. If there are two parts to the title (title and subtitle), separate these by a colon or dash.

Information on the author is given in up to five parts: author's name, professional title, place of work, affiliation (if appropriate), and email address. Write the author's name in small capitals and separate it from the information below by one line of blank space. All this section should be in font size 12.

An example is given below.

All section and sub-section titles within the paper should take sentence-case capitalization and be in bold. Section titles should be in font size 14 and all lower level titles should be in font size 12. Section and sub-section titles should not be indented.

Examples of section and sub-section titles are given below (observing the font size required).

7 The abstract

All submissions to the section Research papers and review articles should be accompanied by an abstract consisting of three paragraphs: the first on the aims of the contribution, titled Objectives; the second on the research methods used, titled Methodology; and the third on findings, titled Results. The abstract should come after the information about the author(s) and should precede the main body of the paper. The title, Abstract, should be in font size 14 in bold. The subtitles Objectives, Methodology and Results should be written as run-in heads in font size 10 and in bold, followed in each case by a colon and the rest of the text in font size 10. The total length of the abstract should be between 150 and 250 words.

An example is given below (observing the font sizes required).

Abstract

Objectives: The main objectives of this paper are to provide an overview of the current state of studies in library and information science in Spanish universities and to discuss the challenges this discipline is facing and the strategies that might strengthen the position of LIS-related studies and professional practice. But the paper also reconsiders why LIS in Spain is crossing the boundaries in two ways. First, it examines interdisciplinarity in LIS and identifies some of the travel companions LIS has made on its journey across the boundaries; and second, it analyzes the negative social repercussions LIS has experienced. Finally, the paper proposes initiatives to mitigate the low visibility of LIS education and the profession as a whole.

Methodology: Data were gathered from the official agencies the Spanish Ministry of Education, Culture and Sports, the Instituto Nacional de Estadística (National Institute of Statistics, INE) and the Red de Centros y Departamentos de Información y Documentación (Network of University Centres and Departments of Information and Documentation, RUID). Further data were obtained from the annual reports of Spanish universities.

Results: We describe the current situation of undergraduate courses, master's degrees and doctoral programmes. Among other observations, we note the general decrease in the demand for LIS undergraduate studies and we propose that the increase in postgraduate studies is unsatisfactory. Finally we reflect on the challenges that these studies are currently facing in this country and suggest strategies that may be used to strengthen the position of both LIS education and the profession as a whole.

All submissions to the sections Case studies and analyses and Resources should be accompanied by an abstract consisting of a single paragraph of between 100 and 150 words. The abstract should come after the information about the author(s) and should precede the main body of the paper. The title, Abstract, should be in font size 14, in bold, while the paragraph below it should be in font size 10.

An example is given below (observing the font sizes required).

Abstract

This paper uses an analysis of the repositories of Spanish universities to identify which institutions contain rare book and manuscript collections. The method used in this analysis involved examining each university on the basis of a list comprising eleven elements. A total of 60 universities were found to have repositories but only 28 (16.8%) of these contained rare book and manuscript collections. In the light of these figures, which suggest that Spanish university repositories do not generally consider the preservation of rare books and manuscripts to be part of their institutional mission, the paper reflects upon why some Spanish university repositories do contain such collections.

8. Bibliography

Bibliographic references will follow the Chicago standards:

https://www.chicagomanualofstyle.org/tools_citationguide.html

9 In-text citations and bibliography

BiD uses the Harvard System (author–date) for in-text citations. These should therefore consist of the author's name, punctuated by a comma, followed by the year of publication. Where a page number is to be included, this should follow the year of publication, introduced by the abbreviation p. Where page numbers are to be included, these should be introduced by the abbreviation pp. and separated by an en-dash. Where there are two or more authors, connect these with the word and. When two or more papers are cited, separate these by a semi-colon. Enclose the whole citation in brackets.

(Berman, 2005, pp. 45–67)
(Osman and Jones, 1998)
(Fenoll and Llueca, 2006; Artigal, 2007)

The bibliography should appear at the end of the paper and be titled Bibliography in font size 14 in bold. Alphabetize entries by the lead name or the first word in the reference and the year of publication, following ISO 690 and ISO 690-2 in the Catalan adaptation by Assumpció Estivill and Cristóbal Urbano.
