Servants at Catalan farms have been less studied than some of their European counterparts. We study an example from the Alt Empordà region of Catalonia to verify the accuracy of some current ideas about them. The study examines working conditions and contract duration, as well as their social and geographic origins, and the age at which they are first hired. This allows us to develop an understanding of the relationships between regular employment at farms, life cycle and the Catalan inheritance system, and also of how these markets were favourable to Empordà’s servants.
