The article analyses, using marriage contracts and testaments from Sant Feliu de Guíxols and its rural hinterland (the Aro Valley), differences in inheritance practices according to social-occupational groups and also the changes in these practices during the period 1780-1860. The case of Sant Feliu de Guíxols shows a precocious erosion of the primogeniture system in a context of strong emigration toAmerica, contrasting with the continuity of traditional practices in the rural area.
