The study of stockbreeding and transhumance from a wide historical perspective is essential for a proper understanding of economic structures, social networks, the use of space and, above all, the territory which stretched from the upper Pyrenees to the area around the city of Lleida. The organization of this territory, and even its landscape, were also determining factors and can in large part be revealed through stockbreeding.
These objectives are partly achievable through the study of various series of documents held in the large archives of the city of Lleida (those of the Capítol de la Catedral and the Paeria), which had almost gone unstudied until now. Special reference is made to two different series that can be consulted in the archives of these two institutions: those concerning butcher’s shops and leasings.
