Perception of formal support among homeless individuals: accessibility and effectiveness of services at the Centro Municipal de Acogida of Santa Cruz de Tenerife.

Homelessness is the manifestation of extreme social exclusion generated by interconnected structural, personal, relational, and institutional factors, which is exacerbated by societal stigma and prejudice that hinder social integration. This study aims to explore the perceptions of individuals experiencing homelessness regarding the support and resources available to them, analyzing their effectiveness and accessibility. To gain an in-depth understanding of their experiences, a qualitative exploratory approach was used, based on interviews with ten residents of the Municipal Shelter Center in Santa Cruz de Tenerife. An interview guide was specifically designed for this study, validated by experts and professionals, and adjusted according to the perspectives of homeless individuals. The results show that, while some participants value the support received positively, others perceive barriers and discrimination in accessing services. Furthermore, unemployment and economic hardship are the predominant causes of their situation, along with factors such as migration and family problems. These findings highlight the heterogeneity in homelessness experiences and the influence of stigma on resource access. It is essential to address both the material and emotional needs of these individuals, proposing integrated strategies that promote their inclusion and social well-being.
