Abstract

The bindings of a large part of the cathedral archive have not been studied or digitized. In 2021 we began the study of a group of artistic bindings from the archives of León Cathedral, including ten late medieval bindings with Gothic, Mudejar and Renaissance ornamental elements, made between the 15th and early 16th centuries. The present contribution undertakes a complete documentary analysis of the materials used in their production, the construction and decorative techniques, the tools used in the decoration of the covers, spines and flyleaves, as well as comparing, through information on the decorative elements, bindings from other institutions, achieving the objective of disseminating and enhancing the value of the medieval artistic bindings in the Archive of León cathedral.
