The current economic crisis is deepening the discussion on university funding. Despite the difficulties in determining the monetary and non-monetary effects of higher education, benefits and individual and social profitability of it are indisputable. Mass access to university; the multiplicity of degrees offered by each university; and the application of European Higher Education Area’ conditions are generating high costs. This is leading to a review of the funding sources, as well as the search for new forms of higher education to get the most efficient use of resources, aspects that are targeted as a conclusion in this paper.
