Service learning applied to disaster management in municipal educational establishments

Abstract

This work presents an experience in engineering education focusing on disaster management through the revision and adaptation of school safety plans in three Talcahuano schools at the request of the Municipal Education Department. This experience is an application of the service-learning methodology in the Natural disasters and a culture of prevention course of the Civil Engineering and Geological Engineering programs of the Universidad Católica de la Santísima Concepción. Its goal is for students and school community to able to effectively recognize environmental risks, describe disaster management stages and collaborate in generating a culture of disaster prevention and preparedness. As a result of this program, integrated school safety plans, including risk maps and vulnerability assessments, were delivered to the schools. Results of the service learning experience show increased student social commitment and the importance for their professional development of learning experiences oriented toward solving real community needs.
