This paper discusses the essay as literary gender of the works by María Zambrano. This problem is related with the conception of the poetic reason and the answer to the question for the meaning of the being. As a consequence, Zambrano moves between essay and fragment, between prose and poetry; and her writing is not only a matter of philosophy, but it implies an aesthetic, this one of the symbolism.
