This essay analyses the reasons for María Zambrano’s exceptional interest in Italian neo-realistic cinema, starting from the article on this kind of cinema she wrote in 1952 for the Cuban journal Bohemia. Beyond the topic of neo-realistic cinema, this paper also ex- plores the relationship Zambrano’s thought might have, in an implicit way, with some post-war European cinema, especially that reflecting on compassion, such as some films by Rossellini, De Sica, Visconti, Fellini or Genina.
