“In the beginning was the Word. Why, Father?” An interpretation of Tarkovski’s cinema from Zambrano’s philosophy

Abstract

Tarkovski’s cinema is very complex work, in which we repeatedly find topics like time, dreams, memory, faith, criticism of rationalism and of Modernity, sacrifice, the world, silence... Many of these elements can be better understood from the point of view of Zambrano’s philosophy. The filmmaker also shares with her a tendency to spiritualism, which, however, is never shown to be an easy solution to human suffering.
