This paper aims to read María Zambrano’s notebooks from the perspective of the essay, understanding this category as a literary genre as well as a knowledge method. The analysis is applied to her Rome’s notebooks, which reflect the work in progress of a knowledge based on the experience of the subject. These features make Zambrano’s notebooks akin to Montaigne’s Essays, a foundational work and model of the genre, even if her published essays don’t follow his model.
