Abstract

This article addresses the ambiguity inherent in the novel as a genre since the publication of Don Quixote. Its focus is Maria Zambrano’s assessment of this ambiguity and its import on her understanding of the novel in general and of Don Quixote in particular, the latter marking a fundamental difference between her interpretation and Ortega y Gasset’s. The article concludes with a critical assessment of Zambrano’s reading of Don Quixote as she expressed it in numerous essays.
