Considering the readings of Maria Zambrano and José Lezama Lima, this essay revisits El Diario de Campaña, a significant work by José Martí, the most important Cuban writer of the nineteenth century, and both a key figure in Modernism and the intellectual leader of Cuban Independence in 1895. We review his final literary work and propose that his pages present a mystic interpretation of patriotic love.
