Arnold Schönberg, well known as a musician, was also a painter. He painted in the period before the First World War and it was precisely in those years that he established an important correspondence with the Russian artist Wassily Kandinsky. His letters can be considered authentic documents of a period in which both Schönberg and Kandinsky made very significant contributions. Schönberg’s pictorial work remained obscure until 1991, when a major exhibition was held in several cities, including Cologne, Vienna and Manchester. The exhibition, under the title Arnold Schönberg. Das bildnerische Werk (Arnold Schönberg. Paintings and drawings), brought together practically all the paintings made by the musician.
