Barcelona became during the Spanish Civil War the first western big city of the history that, in spite of being in the rearguard, suffered systematic and massive air-raids against non-military targets. This circumstance entailed that the institutions and the population of Barcelona moved in a fast way to build and fit up underground tunnels and chambers as a means of protection against this new threat. The present article revises the history of these air-raid shelters and reflects on their current situation and their patrimonial value focusing on the analysis of some paradigmatic cases.
