Focusing on the novel El cielo bajo los pies (2009), by historian and novelist Elsa Plaza, I will examine the construction of the myth around Enriqueta Martí Ripoll, known in the tabloid press of the time as “the Vampire of Raval”, a character that became a scapegoat for the social tension of early-twentieth-century Barcelona. I will analyze Elsa Plaza’s approach to the figure of “the Vampire of Raval” with the aim of describing the socio-political context of a period that was eager for the creation of archetypal figures that could serve to channel out a growing social unrest.
