Abstract

The French writer Flora Tristan (1803-1844) chose to adopt for herself the psychological condition of “foreigner” in her own country, and in her treaty De la nécessité de faire bon accueil aux femmes étrangères (1835) she deals with the situation of “foreign” women who are travelling or starting a new life in France, particularly in Paris. Tristan, a socialist who was politically engaged with the underpriviledged, proposed the creation of an association for those disadvantaged women. By placing both groups of “foreigners” (nationals and aliens) on the same level, and by proposing that both groups be received equally, Tristan advocates aiding the female neighbor in need, and considers as neighbors national subjects as well as subjects in transit, ilegal immigrants and refugees.
