Abstract

This article offers a description and analysis of existing manifestations of critical fat activism in Instagram accounts from Spain and Latin America. In order to contextualize the topic, it starts by defining the main concepts of fat activism, it describes the oppression suffered by the collective, and also revisits the uneasy relationship between feminism and fat activism. Then, the article offers an analysis of specific Instagram accounts and posts that convey the essential postulates of fat activism nowadays: the rupture with the invisibility of fatness, the empowerment of the fat subject through the appropriation of the insults “gorda”, “gordo” and “gorde”, the public expression of the wound through personal confession and, ultimately, the politicization of the concept.
